Thomas Woodberries Wine Fair – Sunday 23rd November 2008

Wine Fair for Thomas Woodberrys for Pediatrics Unit of UCHG

The 23rd of November saw the second wine fair in as many weeks for robertfranciswine.ie. Declan and the crew at Thomas Woodberrys were having their Christmas Wine Fair with over 100 wines to taste and in aid of a good cause - what better way to spend an afternoon !

With the wine fair being held in the fabulous G Hotel in Galway I had high hopes for the session. As a brucey bonus I had the pleasure of meeting Joyce Austin from New Zealand Boutique Wines.

The wines were all clearly displayed and showed really well on the day. What I was really struck by on the day was the huge amount of high quality wines that Woodberrys stock in the €10 – €20. With this price bracket representing the major battleground for Irish Consumers it was hugely interesting to see not only the varietal but also regional choices that were available on the day.

I have recently done a blog post on some of the interesting wines that have been added to the Woodberrys catelogue and this is something that Declan and his team deserve huge credit for. As they are constantly reevaluating their selections to ensure that their wines are relevant and delivering great value for money.

Once again I have picked my favourite 5 wines from tasting which I think totally deliver on the QPR [quality price ratio] .

In reverse order my top 5 were as follows -

At 5 – Chateau De La Charriere Santenay 2006 [Chardonnay From Burgundy in France] - A Mersault beater at half the price 90 Points approx €26.95 a bottle.

At 4 – Obra Roble Ribera Del Duero – A tasty Ribera at a great price 90 plus points Approx €13.95  a bottle. For full tasting note click here

At 3 – Dopoff & Irion Gewurtztraminer 2006- Really interesting white if you want to try something a little different 90 plus points Approx €15.95  a bottle

At 2 – The Ghan The Sleeper Reserve Shiraz 2003- Big brooding rich ripe fruit with a great finish 91 points Approx €26.95 a bottle

At 1 – Greenhough Hope Vineyard Pinot Noir 2004- One of my favourite red that has been served on Christmas Day at Chez Robertfranciswine for the last two years ! A christmas cracker ! 94 points Approx €32.95 a bottle

Overall I really enjoyed the tasting with some very interesting wines on offer – make sure to check out the Alto Vuelo’s and The Bill Pinot Noir really solid wines but just outside my top 5.
