People are going to be a bit more careful about what they buy this Christmas. For Christmas dinner wines, I think people are happy to pay between €16 and €18, but not much more – and they want value for money.
We have a great red – Rosso Piceno ‘Vigna di Gino’ 2005 – that fits that bill at around €16. It’s from a small biodynamic farm and is made up of a 70 per cent montepulciano, 30 per cent sangiovese blend from the Marche region of Italy.
To celebrate you need some bubbles, of course, and in Italy that means prosecco. We have a nice example in Col Saliz Prosecco for around €19. It’s fantastic! A crisp, fresh, sparkling wine with lots of nice fruit and apple flavours with a silky finish.
All these wines are available in Sheridan’s Cheesemongers in Dublin, Galway and Waterford.
