Irish Times – John Wilson

This week John Wilson writes an interesting article on the Budget increases and the effect on wine prices. If you are reading this Minister - BOO ! maybe you will back out of this as well !

John also selects some of his favourites from the new book – 101 great wines under €12. I remember when this used to be under €10 – again BOO Minister !

Kiwi Cuvée Sauvignon Blanc 2007 Vin de pays du Val de Loire, Spar/Tesco/Centra, €9.49-€9.99

“The label looks New World, the wine a cross between old and new. There are good fresh grassy aromas, crisp green fruits with plenty of citrus, and surprisingly good length for a wine at this price.”

Tesco’s Finest Gavi 2007, Tesco €10.49

“I mentioned this wine in passing a few weeks ago. It is a good Gavi at a very attractive price. Light, crisp pear fruits with a mineral edge. Great with lighter fish dishes or as an aperitif”

Miguel Torres Santa Digna Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2007, Widely Available, €11.49-€11.99

“relatively full, rich red fruits, with plenty of body. Dowey suggests trying it with mildly spicy chicken and duck dishes”

Agustinos Pinot Noir Reserva 2007 Bio-Bio Valley, Chile, 14%, €10.49

“This version has soft, ripe summer fruits, with a hint of spice, and a nicely rounded finish.”

Norton Barrel Select Malbec 2005, O’Briens , €9.99

“The Norton Malbec has always been one of my favourite wines from Argentina. Rich juicy dark fruits, without any bully-boy tannins”

Mitchelton Blackwood Park Riesling 2006 Central Victoria, Australia, Dunnes Stores, €10.79

This has been one of the best value wines in the country for some years now. Floral, with plump red apple fruits set off perfectly by a mineral streak. ”

Irish Independent – Katherine Donnelly

Taurus Roble 2005 Toro DO, Molloys Liquor Store, €9.99

“super concentration of brambly fruit with a streak of liquorice all the way through”

Monte da Peceguina 2007 Alentejo, Selected Independents, €18.99

“charming layers of sweet raspberries and blackberries interwoven with chocolate and sweet wood.”

Emilio Moro 2004 Ribera del Duero DO, Selected Independents, €27.50

“ripe red and black fruit beautifully wrapped in toasty oak with a touch of spice”
