Interesting Red Blend from the Clare Valley

The Red Mullet [by Pikes] 2005

This entry level wine from Pikes, is a rich and lush blend of Shiraz, Mourvedre, Tempranillo, and Grenache. Hailing from South Australia, this slightly unusual blend offers soft easy drinking and excellent value in its price bracket.

Aromatically this wine is soft, lush, with blackfruits, notes of strawberries and touch of mint. But the addition of the Mourvedre gives this wine another dimension – with some forest floor, or earthy mushroom action [This may not sound to appealing but trust me it is fantastic !]

On the palate, the fruit is smooth, ripe, and beautifully balanced. The tannins are fine, and well intergrated. The concentration and purity of fruit is good.

This wine cries out for barbeque foods, spare ribs, burgers. Whatever your favourite is break out the Barbie, fire up the coals and crack open a bottle of Red Mullet.

I have covered this wine in a full section on a tasting that I attended hosted by Pikes and Harvest. I had this wine again recently and again it performed brilliantly. Really good buy at this price !!
