Lidl Wine Series – Bisinger & Co Rose Brut Champagne

Bisinger & Co Rose Champagne Rose NV

Much more intensely coloured rose champagne, a mix of salmon and strawberry pink. This wine does not have the delicacy of some of the more high end Rose Champagnes in the marketplace today. The beading[bubbles] is a little bigger then I would have liked as well for Champagne. I would be looking much more for that delicate beading rather then larger coke sided bubbles.

On the nose the initial hit is of a yeasty bread component which is followed by some red fruits – Strawberries, Raspberries predominantly. For my palate the fruits appeared a little fake – heading towards like a toy scratch and sniff aroma. Similar to on the eye the nose of this wine lacks delicacy and pose it is much more in your face and aggressive. The beading died off a little quickly as well.

On the palate the strawberries, raspberries are joined by some red currant flavours. The running trend of a lack of delicacy and finesse continues on the palate as this wine is a little ploddy or cumbersome rather then fleet footed. The finish was quite sharp and bitter with a strange metallic type quality that wasn’t overly pleasant. I love acid in my Champagne as much as the next guy but this was a sour bitterness rather then an cleansing acidity which really didn’t do it for me.

Overall a very average champagne that just didnt deliver the way that I hoped it would. I have had good experiences with previous Lidl Sparklers [Click Here] but this one didn’t live up to my expectations.

I don’t think i could ever trust a champagne at that price, especially with the extra effort involved in making rose. When it comes to champagne I think price can be a helpful quality indicator, not the only one mind you , but one of many.

I’m not sure I totally agree with Kevin here. If Lidl were cutting margins very tight and they got their sourcing 100% correct I think it is just about possible to get a decent Champagne into ireland at this price. It isn’t rare to spot an acceptable bottle of fizz on the Irish market for €25, and if margins were cut in favour of selling some serious bulk then I could see €20 being a realistic price.

Unfortunately this doesn’t look like what Lidl are doing here.
